3D Scanning Services with HandyScan Black Elite
At the Natural Sciences Museum, we offer expert 3D scanning services using the HandyScan Black Elite, one of the most advanced handheld scanners available. This technology allows us to create incredibly precise and detailed 3D scans of objects, from small fossils to large artifacts. Whether you're conducting research, preserving a valuable item, or creating high-quality replicas, our 3D scanning services provide accurate digital models that can be used for a wide range of applications.
Our 3D Scanning Services
We provide professional 3D scanning for a variety of needs, including research, conservation, and exhibition preparation. Using the HandyScan Black Elite, we can scan objects of all sizes, providing high-quality 3D models that capture even the finest details.
Applications of 3D Scanning
- Conservation and Preservation: Digitally documenting artifacts and fossils without damaging them. 3D models allow for long-term storage and study, ensuring preservation without physical handling.
- Research and Analysis: 3D scanning allows for detailed analysis of objects, making it easy for researchers to study specimens in-depth, from fossils to archaeological finds.
- Replicas and Exhibitions: Create accurate, high-quality replicas of scanned objects, ideal for exhibitions or educational purposes. Our services enable the production of models that are identical to the original, without risking damage to rare items.
- Virtual Collections: 3D models can be used to create virtual collections, making artifacts accessible remotely for research or sharing within the scientific community.
- 3D Printing: We offer associated 3D printing services, allowing you to print the objects that have been scanned. This is perfect for creating replicas or for scientific study when the original specimen cannot be physically handled.
Pricing and Services
Our 3D scanning service is priced at £120 per hour, which includes the use of the HandyScan Black Elite and a qualified technician to operate the scanner and assist with the process. Please note that travel costs are not included in the price and will be calculated separately based on the location of the scanning site. We are happy to travel to clients for on-site scanning to accommodate your needs.

How It Works
- Initial Consultation
We begin by discussing your specific requirements, whether it’s for a research project, replica creation, or conservation. This helps us understand the scope of your project and how best to proceed.
- Scanning Process
Our technician will travel to your location (or arrange for scanning at our facilities) to capture detailed scans of your object using the HandyScan Black Elite. We’ll ensure that all angles and details are covered for an accurate model.
- Processing and Refining
Once the scan is complete, we process the data to create a clean and detailed 3D model. We can refine the model to meet your specific needs, whether for further analysis, printing, or display.
- Final Output and 3D Printing
After processing, we deliver the 3D model in your preferred format. If you’re interested in 3D printing, we can produce a high-quality physical replica of your scanned object, using various materials to suit your requirements.
