Learn about Prehistoric life

Fossil Club at the Natural Sciences Museum

Do you have a budding palaeontologist at home who loves to dig into the past and explore the world of dinosaurs, fossils, and ancient life? The Fossil Club at the Natural Sciences Museum is the perfect place for kids to discover, learn, and have fun with all things fossil-related!

What is the Fossil Club?

The Fossil Club is an exciting, hands-on program designed for young explorers to dive into the fascinating world of paleontology. This club is open to children aged 5-12 and offers a fun and educational experience where they can learn about fossils, dinosaurs, and the history of life on Earth. Our young palaeontologists participate in a range of engaging activities, from fossil hunting to crafts, and even meet museum experts who share their knowledge and enthusiasm for ancient creatures.

Fossil Club Opportunities

By joining the Fossil Club, kids get the opportunity to:

  • Learn About Fossils: Explore the stories behind fossils, how they’re formed, and the different types of fossils that exist.
  • Hands-On Activities: Get involved in fossil-themed crafts, dig boxes, and excavation simulations. Kids will also have the chance to handle real fossils.
  • Exclusive Events: Access special events like fossil workshops, interactive tours of the museum’s exhibits, and expert talks.
  • Fossil Club Badge: Every new member receives an official Fossil Club badge to wear proudly.
  • Access to the Fossil Club Community: Meet like-minded kids who share an interest in palaeontology and make new friends while exploring the wonders of the past.

How It Works

The Fossil Club runs on a weekly basis, every Saturday & Sunday, with new themes and activities each session. Every meeting is designed to be interactive, educational, and above all, fun! Whether it’s learning how to identify fossils, creating fossil replicas, or discovering more about the prehistoric world, each session is packed with exciting experiences.

Fossil Walks

During the summer, the Fossil Club takes kids on fossil walks through Sheffield and the Peak District. These fun outdoor adventures let young explorers hunt for real fossils, learn about the region’s ancient past, and experience palaeontology first-hand. It’s the perfect way to combine adventure and discovery in some of the best fossil spots around!

Sheffield Children's University

We’re thrilled to be part of Sheffield Children's University (CU), an inspiring initiative that encourages children to discover learning beyond the classroom. Since its inception in 2008, Sheffield CU has empowered over 44,000 young people to engage in enriching activities, accumulating an incredible 3 million hours of learning outside regular school hours.

As a member of the Children’s University, you can bring your Passport to Learning to the museum and collect credits for attending our Fossil Club activities. These credits can also be earned by visiting other exciting Learning Destinations like Kelham Island Museum and Sheffield Museums, where you can explore and learn about history, science, and culture in fun, hands-on ways.

Joining Sheffield CU offers far more than just fun – research shows that participating helps boost confidence, motivation, and academic performance, with children achieving better SATs and GCSE results. So, not only will you be enjoying amazing activities, but you’ll also be setting yourself up for success!

To get started, you can pick up your Passport to Learning from any Sheffield library for just £3.50, or speak with your school if they are subscribed to the program. Whether you’re learning at the museum or at one of our fantastic partner destinations, every new experience counts towards your CU journey.
