The Natural Sciences Museum is a cozy and welcoming museum in the north of Sheffield. It is packed with fascinating objects, active research, and creative science behind the scenes. While modest in size, it plays an important role as a hub for scientific study, innovation, and learning while caring for collections of national significance and supporting work that reaches beyond its walls. As a charitable organisation, the museum exists for its community, offering opportunities to explore, learn, volunteer, and take part in the discovery of the natural world.

The museum’s gallery is an engaging space filled with fossils, minerals, and changing displays. Visitors can explore remarkable objects up close, discovering stories that span millions of years in a gallery that is easy to enjoy at your own pace.

The museum is designed to be experienced through guided tours, which bring the collections and stories behind them to life. Led by knowledgeable guides, tours offer insight, context, and the chance to explore objects up close while asking questions along the way.

The museum gift shop is open to everyone, whether or not you are visiting the gallery. It offers a carefully chosen range of science-inspired gifts, books, and souvenirs. The shop is a welcoming space to browse, pick up something unique, and support the museum’s charitable work.

Lab sessions invite you behind the scenes to take part in fossil preparation in a real palaeontology laboratory. Visitors get to prepare and keep genuine fossils using professional tools. No experience is needed, and sessions are open to ages 12+

Fossil Club is a Sunday morning activity for children aged 5–14, offering a fun and hands-on way to learn about nature and the history of life. Through fossils, objects, and simple activities, young explorers can discover how scientists study the natural world, with sessions available to book online or drop-in on the day.

While visiting the Museum, guests are welcome to approach the team and volunteers with any questions they have about the natural world. Our staff are happy to chat, share knowledge, and help bring the collections and science behind them to life.
