Research under this theme explores the formation and evolution of planets, including Earth, to better understand how planetary systems develop and change over time. Drawing on geological evidence and comparative planet science, this work connects our planet’s deep past to wider processes across the solar system.

This theme investigates how life has evolved over millions of years, from early organisms to the diversity seen today. Using fossils, collections, and modern scientific techniques, research reveals patterns of change, adaptation, and extinction across the history of life on Earth.

Collections Unlocked focuses on unlocking the scientific and cultural value of museum collections. Through curation, digitisation, and new analytical approaches, this research enables specimens and data to be used in new ways by scientists, communities, and partners worldwide.

Research in this theme examines how biodiversity is changing in response to environmental pressures and human activity. By combining historical collections with contemporary data, the Museum helps track change over time and inform conservation and nature recovery efforts.

Tools for Discovery centres on laboratory R&D to develop and refine the tools, techniques, and methods used in scientific research. This work supports innovation across the Museum, enabling new ways to study, analyse, and share knowledge about the natural world.
