The museum offers a range of opportunities for those interested in public education and engagement. These roles provide practical experience supporting learning and visitor engagement in a museum setting.


Gallery Assistant Volunteering
Supporting weekend gallery access and visitor engagement.
Requirements:

  • Aged 16+ 
  • DBS check required
  • Availability on Saturdays and/or Sundays
     

Fossil Club Support
Assisting with supervised educational sessions focused on fossils and Earth sciences.
Requirements:

  • Aged 18+
  • DBS check required
  • Availability on Sundays

Learn Fossil Prep Techniques

The museum offers a range of opportunities for those interested in fossil preparation techniques, from introductory experiences to structured academic pathways within the laboratory.


Lab Experience
An introductory, hands-on session designed to explore basic fossil preparation techniques.
Requirements:

  • Aged 12+
  • £32 per session
  • Available Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
     

Private Lab Classes
One-to-one or small-group tuition focused on fossil preparation techniques.
Requirements:

  • Aged 16+
  • £30 per hour
  • Available Monday to Friday

Fossil Lab Assistant
Supporting supervised fossil preparation work within the laboratory.
Requirements:

  • Aged 18+
  • DBS check required
  • Available Monday and Tuesday
     

Work Placement
Structured placements for students undertaking formal study in relevant fields.
Requirements:

  • Aged 18+
  • Enrolled in higher education
  • Available Monday to Friday

Internship Programme
Time-limited internships aligned with academic programmes and research activity.
Requirements:

  • Aged 18+
  • Enrolled in higher education
  • Available Monday to Friday (programme-dependent)

Learn Curation

The museum offers opportunities for those interested in collections care, documentation, and research support within a professional curatorial environment.


Curation Assistant
Supporting collections care, documentation, and curatorial tasks under supervision.
Requirements:

  • Aged 16+
  • DBS check required
  • Available Wednesday

Work Placement
Structured placements supporting curatorial work for students undertaking formal study.
Requirements:

  • Aged 18+
  • Enrolled in higher education
  • Available Monday to Friday
     

Internship Programme
Time-limited internships focused on curatorial practice and collections research.
Requirements:

  • Aged 18+
  • Enrolled in higher education
  • Available Monday to Friday (programme-dependent)

Independent Study

The museum welcomes independent researchers, students, and enthusiasts who wish to undertake self-directed study using its research collections and library. These resources support a wide range of interests across the Earth and life sciences, including natural history, palaeontology, and related disciplines.


Access to the research collection and library is available by arrangement, allowing individuals to consult reference materials in a supervised research environment. Independent study visits are intended to support focused research and learning, and requests are considered on a case-by-case basis to ensure appropriate access and support.
